Full Service

I pulled into a gas station last week and a guy walked out to pump my gas. Full service. I hadn’t seen that since I was a kid.

He didn’t ask what grade. Didn’t try to upsell me on a car wash. Just grabbed the nozzle, pumped the gas, and said “have a good one” when the tank was full. The whole interaction took ninety seconds and I’ve been thinking about it for a week.

We’ve built an entire industry around making simple things complicated. You want a website? Here’s a discovery phase, a sprint planning session, a Jira board, three standups, and a retro. You wanted a website. You got a process.

I think about this every time I scope a project. The client doesn’t want to attend your meetings. They don’t want to learn your tools. They want the thing they asked for, built well, delivered without drama. Ninety seconds. Have a good one.

The best work I’ve ever done felt like that gas station. Client says what they need. I build it. We shake hands. No one had to sit through a deck about my methodology.

Full service isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing exactly what’s needed and nothing else.
