Just for kicks, I reworked Yahoo's front page using XHTML 1.1 with CSS for layout. It's not a mirror copy of the original, but is intended to demonstrate that it's not only possible for the authors of large, mainstream websites to use valid structural markup, but that there are clear benefits in doing so.

My version is roughly half the size of Yahoo's, so the immediate & obvious advantage would be in bandwidth savings.

IE 5 & up and Gecko-based browsers handle it fine, and I went ahead & tweaked the styles to deliver something reasonable to Netscape 4.x users. It shouldn't be much trouble to do so for IE 4.x.
